Phuket Town (Phuket City) is the island’s administrative and commercial hub. Sino-Portuguese Old Town, markets, hospitals, government offices — and no swimming beach in the town centre.

Atmosphere
Urban-island: cafés, street food, offices, traffic. Evenings can be lively in Old Town without matching Patong’s party model. More “city” than “resort.”
Suitable for
People who need services, hospitals or offices nearby; longer stays focused on logistics; food lovers; anyone who doesn’t need a beach outside the door.
Accommodation
Apartments, shophouses, hotels and some condo projects. Often better value for space than west-coast beachfront. Mid-range long-term rentals are common; beach premiums don’t apply the same way.
Beaches
Beaches are a drive or taxi away (east/west coasts). Plan beach days as trips. Some stay in town and visit beaches selectively.
Transportation
Central for buses/taxis within the island’s road network. Scooter still common. Airport is relatively accessible compared with far south beaches. Traffic in town hours matters.
Restaurants & everyday life
Strong everyday infrastructure: markets, malls, clinics, banks, coworking-friendly cafés. Easiest place on the island for “city errands.”
Long-term living
Excellent logistics base. Trade-off is heat, traffic and distance to swim beaches. Many combine town living with weekend beach trips.
Families
Workable if schools/hospitals/services matter more than beach access. Choose quieter residential pockets away from the busiest roads.
Remote workers
Often strong — cafés, coworking options, fibre more available in many buildings. Confirm at the specific property.
Advantages
Services density, value vs beachfront, food scene, central logistics, hospitals and offices.
Disadvantages
No town-centre swim beach, traffic/heat, less “holiday postcard” living.
Who should consider it
Longer stays oriented around practical life, work, or services — not beach-first holidays.
